2025 Scholarship Application

The Howard University Alumni Club of Greater Washington, DC (HUAC GWDC) has been in existence for more than 50 years.

The club was established to promote Howard University as an
institution of academic excellence, to create and maintain an environment that encourages alumni
participation through volunteerism and financial support, and to sponsor activities and events in
support of the University, its students and the community. In the spirit of this tradition we are excited to field applications from enrolled Howard University students in good standing for scholarship awards of $2500 each.

 

  • Scholarship award decisions of the HUAC GWDC are final.  These are one-time awards. Application due date is Friday, February 28, 2025, 11:59 PM (ET).
  • Finalists may be required to participate in an interview to be given further consideration.
  • Winners may be invited to attend an HUAC GWDC meeting for announcement of the awards and to be introduced to the HUAC GWDC members.

Four (4) Awards of $2500 Each

Eligibility Requirements

  • Graduate of a high school located in one of the following jurisdictions:
    • Washington DC;
    • Alexandria City
    • Arlington County, VA;
    • 'Prince George's or
      Montgomery Counties, MD.
  • Currently enrolled in good standing with Howard University
  • Complete the application as prescribed by the instructions herein; and have a GPA of a least 2.5

Theme: How I Plan to Fulfill and Achieve My Dreams After College

This year’s theme, How I Plan to Fulfill and Achieve My Dreams After College, encompasses the spirit of HBCUs, setting goals, as well as the participants’ personal experiences and ambitions.

Rules & Guidelines

  1. Participants will develop a speech that focuses on one or more of the following:
  • Scholastic achievement
  • Developing academic, professional, and social relationships
  • Focusing and setting career goals
  1. Participants will be judged on the following criteria:

Content

  • Speech addresses contest theme and remains on topic.
  • Speech is well developed and main points are clearly organized.
  • Speech adheres to Standard English grammar rules (e.g., pronunciation, sentence structure, etc.).
  • Speech is relevant in today’s environment.
  • Speech is original and informative.

Presentation

  • Speech is 3-5 minutes in length.
  • Presenter holds the attention of the audience.
  • Presenter projects clearly, maintains good posture, and props (if present) are used effectively to enhance the presentation.
  • Presenter speaks clearly and distinctly.
  • Speech is presented within the allotted time.
  1. Points and penalties:

Participants will lose points or be disqualified if they do not adhere to the time limit. The length of the speech may not be less than 3 minutes nor more than 5 minutes.
