Celebrating Women's History Month: Roberta Flack and Hazel Dukes

Ms. Roberta Flack and Dr. Hazel Dukes are two iconic women who gave their all and made a difference in the world.  They were two strong Black women who we recently lost. In their lifetimes, they were forces to be reckoned with.  First, the Grammy award winner, Roberta Flack, a Howard alumna, soothed us with her beautiful voice.  Some of her hit songs “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and Killing me Softly, you can still hear the melody in your head.  Ms. Flack found a musical sweet spot that touched on elements of jazz, pop, classical and folk.  Second, Dr. Hazel Dukes, a civil rights activist, spoke truth to power and the powerless as she served as National President of the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and as the President of the New York Chapter of the NAACP.  Originally from Montgomery, Al, she met Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and was a neighbor to Mrs.. Rosa Parks.  With mentors such as these, no wonder she was destined for greatness.  For this Women's History Month, we salute these two women.

As we continue to celebrate Women's History Month, we have an article on our oldest living club member, Ms. Willa Faulkner.  Also, in this edition of our spring newsletter, we have an article on Alternative Spring Break and the Charter Day Dinner.

Our next membership meeting will be in person on April 28, 2025, at 7:00 pm, place TBD (but on campus), when we celebrate our four scholarship winners. You are encouraged to join one of our many committees so that you can become engaged with the club. If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected].

In Bison Spirit,

Hazel L. Robinson
