President’s Corner: September-October 2024

“Welcome Back, Bison!”

Welcome back Bison to a new school year as we welcome our new baby bison, the Class of 2028!  We are so thankful for our long blue line of illustrious alumni who have made their mark on society and in history.  We have one such bison, alumna Kamala Devi Harris, who has accepted the nomination of the Democratic National Party to run for President of the United States of America.  Did you watch that remarkable acceptance speech?  Here we are at the precipice of What Michael Jackson would say, “I wanna start Something.”  And may I add we are also starting something “fresh” as well.  Running on a platform of “Freedom, Opportunity, Unity, and Inclusion” Alumna Harris is running to be the President of all of the United States.

From Shirley Chilsom’s campaign slogan, “Unbought and Unbossed,” to Jesse Jackson’s “Keep Hope Alive” and “Our Time Has Come,” to Al Sharpton's “Keep the Dream Alive” to Barack Obama's “Yes, We Can” to, Kamala Harris's “We Are Not Going Back”, and “When We Fight,  We Win” we can see the evolution of progress in the political arena of African- Americans who dared to lead the most powerful country in the world.  And here we are again, history in the making.

We see that this school year is going to be dynamic and productive in several ways.  Our first meeting of the year will be on Tuesday, October 1st in Douglass Hall, Room 221 on main campus.  We have invited President Ben Vinson III to speak.  In addition, we will discuss our calendar for the year, upcoming activities you may participate in, and committees to join.  We need all hands-on deck to make this year a successful one.  Some committees/activities you can join are the Homecoming Party, The Art of Interpretation, Project Giveback, Fundraising, Holiday Project, Alternative Spring Break, and Mental Health Committee.  Find out more details on October 1st.

Club members, I appreciate you and your support and leadership of me and the club last year, and I thank you in advance for a successful year.  It takes all of us, working together to make this club successful and the year prosperous.  I love you all.
